Job Overview

A skilled PLC Programmer is sought to design, program, test, and maintain Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems within a plastics manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will play a key role in industrial automation processes, ensuring the efficient and reliable operation of manufacturing equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain PLC programs to support automated machinery and processes

  • Design and implement control systems tailored to plastics manufacturing

  • Troubleshoot and configure PLC hardware and software (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric, etc.)

  • Perform testing, debugging, and validation of PLC systems to ensure functionality and safety

  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians to integrate PLCs with broader control systems

  • Provide technical support to production and maintenance teams on control-related issues

  • Maintain detailed records of PLC configurations, programs, and system modifications

  • Stay informed on industry advancements, technologies, and best practices in automation

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience)

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in PLC programming and control systems

  • Proficiency in ladder logic, structured text, and/or function block diagram programming

  • Strong knowledge of control systems in a plastics manufacturing setting

  • Ability to interpret schematics, technical drawings, and wiring diagrams

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail

  • Effective communication and teamwork capabilities

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems

  • Familiarity with Modbus, Python, Raspberry Pi integration for automation

  • Experience with IQMS/Delmia ERP systems

  • Prior work experience in the plastics or packaging manufacturing industry

Job Summary:

The Senior Automation Engineer will be responsible for scoping, designing, developing, and supporting cost-effective automated manufacturing cells and other automation systems. These systems may include robotics, machine tending, material handling, RFID systems, automated assembly, and other automation technologies to enhance manufacturing operations.

This role requires expertise in industrial robotics programming and integration, CNC machine tool tending, control system software, and PLC programming. Experience with SCADA, enterprise system interfaces, and platforms such as Ignition, Fanuc, and Rockwell Automation is highly desired. The selected candidate will lead and manage a team of 3-8 engineers and collaborate across engineering and operations teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, develop, and implement automation solutions to optimize efficiency and increase production throughput.

  • Oversee automation capital equipment specification and procurement, balancing technological capabilities and return on investment.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external automation integrators to address project requirements.

  • Standardize automated systems and equipment, including hardware/software specifications and safety standards.

  • Lead manufacturing improvement initiatives involving automation components such as RFID systems, vision systems, and robotics.

  • Provide support and ongoing development for existing automation projects.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot automation-related software and hardware issues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field with a focus on control engineering.

  • 10+ years of experience in automation and control systems. Aerospace and lean manufacturing experience is a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, software, electronics, and electromechanical automation technologies.

  • Solid understanding of computer programming and software development for control systems.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment issues.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Senior Controls Engineer in Albuquerque, NM. This role involves leading the delivery of automation systems for a diverse range of industries, including semiconductor, life sciences, food and beverage, and more. You will have the opportunity to lead a team, interact directly with clients, and guide the development and implementation of automation solutions using PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms.

In this leadership role, you will oversee the full project lifecycle from requirements gathering and specification development to testing, commissioning, and qualification of automation systems. This is a key position within the organization, and success is measured by securing repeat business with both new and existing clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver innovative automation solutions for industrial processes and machinery, either independently or leading a team.

  • Develop control system architectures, select appropriate components, and create detailed schematic diagrams and system documentation.

  • Program PLC, DCS, and RTU controllers, develop HMI/SCADA visualization, and build databases for historical data storage and display.

  • Implement and commission control systems at client facilities.

  • Work with industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.) to design and implement fiber, wired, and wireless systems.

  • Lead project management activities, including developing project execution plans, schedules, task prioritization, budget tracking, and conflict resolution.

  • Oversee daily operations of projects up to $1M and ensure project profitability.

  • Provide technical leadership on design standards, mentoring junior engineers and technicians.

  • Serve as the Project Manager for smaller projects, ensuring successful delivery within scope and budget.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 10 years of experience in Controls Engineering.

    • Expertise with Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Modicon PLCs.

    • Proficiency in HMI/SCADA systems, including ICONICS Genesis64, Wonderware ArchestrA, and GE CIMPLICITY.

    • Familiarity with DCS platforms like Emerson DeltaV or similar.

    • Experience with SQL, .NET, Power BI, Grafana, and APIs.

    • Prior experience in industries such as Semiconductor fabrication, Life Sciences, Building Automation, Food and Beverage, and Oil & Gas.

    • Experience designing electrical schematics and control panels under 480VAC, as well as AutoCAD usage is preferred.

  • Leadership Experience:

    • Experience leading engineering teams, providing control system solutions.

    • Ability to mentor less experienced engineers and technicians.

    • Field device troubleshooting and job estimating experience.
